We heard a while ago that Joseph Gordon Levitt was attached to a Sandman film. And missing from the released DC/WB announced film slate was this movie. Why? Because apparently we will be seeing a whole different list for Vertigo/DC films that are going to be released by Warner Bros.
Recent comments from Sandman creator Neil Gaiman has suggested that there will be a whole different slate release for Vertigo films. He says:
“It’s not a DC Comics film. It’s a Vertigo film. That’s a different slate of films, and a different announcement.”
Say what??? So here’s what we know so far: Joseph Gordon Levitt is on board to produce and possibly star and direct the upcoming Sandman film. We also heard of reports earlier this year that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are set to produce an adaption of the Vertigo comic book ‘Sleeper‘. And back in April this year we got comments of the development of a Fables film and 100 Bullets film. So potentially we could see a new announcement within the next few months that includes are slate of Vertigo/WB films with Sandman, Sleeper, Fables and 100 Bullets.
Earlier I discussed how the potential Y: The Last Man film is dead. However fingers crossed, if they do announce a Vertigo slate of films hopefully this popular Vertigo print is included as well.
Now the question is, how will WB be able to do all these films? Because we now know they are doing:
- Batman v Superman
- Suicide Squad
- Wonder Woman
- Justice League Part One
- The Flash
- Justice League Part Two
- Green Lantern
- Untitled Batman film
- Untitled Superman film
But really all they would need to do is make just one Vertigo film a year, and considering WB already pump out around 20-30 movies a year, it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch. We also know that New Line Cinema are going to be the studio making the Shazam movie, with Warner Bros doing the distribution, so we could see more the films being outsourced to New Line as well.
And really it would make sense for them to do a separate announcement for their Vertigo films. Having Sandman in this cinematic universe could prove difficult, and even though in the current DC continuity Sandman in part of the same universe, translating that to film could be rather confusing.
So potentially we could be seeing many different live action DC universes. You have:
- Arrow/The Flash CW-verse
- Justice League-verse
So what do you think about having all these different live action DC universes? Do you want to see a separate slate for Vertigo films? Let me know!
