The Flash season 2 episode 7 brought back everyone’s favourite psychic gorilla, Grodd! Which is pretty bad timing for Barry as he deals with the physical and emotional repercussions from last week, so let’s discuss The Flash season 2 episode 7!
Who knows where Grodd has been hanging out since the last time we saw him, but he has decided to make a reappearance. With the death of his “father”, Grodd has been feeling pretty lonely. So like Frankenstein’s monster, he decides the best way to deal with loneliness is to create another like him. And who better to help him then Caitlin!
Yes the King Kong/Ann Darrow parallels were quite apparent. You can’t help but feel sorry for Grodd. The CGI seems to have been improved this episode, and you could really see Grodd’s detailed facial expressions. His confusion, love and hurt were all very clear.
But he has a new beginning, so what was the place Grodd ended up in at the end of the episode? Well it looks like it’s The Flash’s version of Gorilla City! In the comics Gorilla City is the home of a tribe of gorillas with powers, with Grodd being their dictator. Although Grodd is typically seen as a villain, many of the gorillas in Gorilla City are good, and don’t agree with their leader’s way.
As Wells discussed, this version of Gorilla City on the show is where gorillas who have been experimented on go. Looking at the environment they have created for themselves, it looks like they are very advanced. The experimentation route is a lot more logical than the whole meteorite giving the gorillas powers, that is often used as an explanation in the comics. Grodd will probably become their leader and I’m sure that in a future episode we’ll see Grodd try to turn Central City into Gorilla City.
The other part of The Flash season 2 episode 7 focused on the aftermath of Zoom’s attack from last week. I’ve always appreciated the emotional layer the show has, and especially so this episode. You really felt Barry’s pain. Zoom completely broke him down, ruined the persona Barry had built for himself. But of course we couldn’t expect him to stay in that wheelchair for long.
Helping Barry with his recovery was the return of his dad. As I wrote about earlier, there is a major theory that Earth-1 or Earth-2 Henry Allen is Zoom. So far other than physical similarities, there isn’t much substance to that theory. However there was a moment where Wells and Allen shook hands, and I don’t know if I’m reading too much into it, but it was slightly eerie. Almost as if there was a history there or something big was going to happen between the two of them. It’s probably me reading too much into it, but we won’t find out anything soon as Henry is leaving again.
Oh and it looks like Cisco just found out that his girlfriend is about to become Hawkgirl. Both The Flash and Arrow have been leading up to the newest CW superhero show, Legends of Tomorrow. Unfortunately we have to wait until December to see the big crossover episode, ‘Legends of Today’, where Kendra Saunders becomes Hawkgirl. The episodes will also set up the big bad of Legends of Tomorrow, the immortal Vandal Savage.
As for the West family storyline, it looks like we’re slowly building up to reveal of Wally West. A few episodes ago we found out that Iris’ mother had another child, a son. This son will be the famous Wally West, who will also become a Speedster eventually. I also have to say that now Iris is in the loop with everything that’s going on, her character no longer annoys me, in fact I’m starting to enjoy her presence. Hopefully we start to see more from Iris, and the show helps to grow her character a bit more.
Overall The Flash season 2 episode 7 was a fun and emotional episode, and although it didn’t really have anything to do with our big bad of the season, it still was an enjoyable episode. We probably won’t see Zoom until mid-season, but until then we have Vandal Savage to look forward to!
